IFRA

Have you ever wondered what IFRA is and why it is important to know?

What Is IFRA and Why It Matters in Skincare

In the world of skincare, the use of Essential oils, is usually, well...essential.  But behind every drop lies a complex balance of safety, science, and sustainability. This is where IFRA, the International Fragrance Association, comes in.

What is IFRA?

IFRA is the global authority that sets standards for the safe use of fragrance ingredients. Through a combination of scientific research and industry collaboration, IFRA develops and enforces guidelines that protect consumers, the environment, and the integrity of the products we use daily. Nearly 90% of the global fragrance industry voluntarily adheres to these standards.

For skincare brands like ours, IFRA compliance isn’t just about meeting safety benchmarks — it’s about ethical responsibility. Every ingredient we use, especially those that contribute to a product’s scent, must meet stringent criteria to ensure they’re safe on the skin, particularly for sensitive areas and long-term use.

Safety You Can Trust

Fragrance ingredients, particularly those derived from natural sources, can be potent. Essential oils, for instance, can cause irritation or allergic reactions if not properly formulated. IFRA Standards help mitigate these risks by regulating how much of certain ingredients can be used, and in what types of products.

This is crucial for products like facial creams, body lotions, or serums — where prolonged contact with the skin means that safety must be prioritized at every level.

Recognising the Origins of Plants and Their Impact

IFRA’s role extends beyond consumer safety. Their guidelines also bring attention to the origins and traceability of botanical ingredients. By mapping out how certain plant extracts are sourced, IFRA helps foster greater transparency in the fragrance and skincare industries.

This matters. When we know where our ingredients come from — whether it's sandalwood sustainably grown in Australia or lavender harvested in Provence — we make more informed decisions about sustainability, biodiversity, and fair trade. It also helps protect endangered species and ensure that natural resources are not exploited.

A Commitment to Ethical Skincare

As a skincare brand, the White Cloud commitment to IFRA standards is part of a broader promise: to care not just for your skin, but for the world around us. By aligning with IFRA guidelines, we ensure that every fragrance we use is both safe and ethically sourced. It’s one more way we’re working to build trust — one formulation at a time.
